Continuing Education

While the Illinois Inspector Training Institute prides itself on educating new inspectors, we also want to make sure that current inspectors stay informed on current issues in the field. It is important for all home inspectors to make sure that they keep up with emerging trends in the field as well as in related industries, so we offer Continuing Education courses that fill the state requirements for continuing education for home inspectors as well as keep inspectors informed about new trends in the topic areas.

We currently offer three continuing education courses. Each course is offered twice this calendar year. Courses are worth six hours of state continuing education credit and last a full day from 9:30 am until 5:00 pm with an hour break for lunch. Course descriptions follow below for each course. In order to register, you should call the Tomacor office at 312.475.0835.

The Guide for Gas Usage in Chicago
The principle focus of this six hour course is adequate air requirements for safe operation of fossil-fuel burning appliances. Yearly accidental carbon monoxide deaths are reported in the state of Illinois with great regularity, and some of these deaths may be able to be avoided with the presence of an informed home inspector during an inspection. Specific subject areas will include: important terms, air requirements, appliance location, venting, calculations, service pipes, etc.

Illinois Property Maintenance Standards:
An Overview of the International Property Maintenance Code and its Relationship to Illinois Home Inspectors Home inspectors within the state of Illinois are looking at buildings that will fall under this code’s influence more than any other single code or standards text. The beauty of this code lies within its simplicity, requiring construction, analysis, insight and judgement from each building inspector. Specific subject areas will include: common construction definitions; existing construction general requirements; light, ventilation and occupancy limitations; plumbing facilities and fixture requirements; mechanical and electrical requirements; etc.

Existing Residences Minimum Standards
This class is designed to familiarize and in some cases reinforce the state of Illinois home inspector’s knowledge of minimum requirements for residential occupancies. The classroom discussion will focus on the city of Chicago’s Minimum Standards for Existing Buildings. Emphasis will be placed upon Chicago’s standards due to the sheer number and volume of buildings that are covered by these standards in the state of Illinois. In addition, classroom presentation will emphasize minimum residential construction standards for existing buildings which are directly applicable throughout the state of Illinois.

All student materials will be provided to students three days to one week in advance of the scheduled class date, and students may pick up their materials at the Tomacor offices. Please call the office to let personnel know that you will be coming to get your materials. The fee for continuing education courses is as follows: $150 per class, $100 per class for IITI graduates (with certificate), and during June all courses are free to IITI graduates (with certificate).
