Is carbon monoxide entering your home?
CARBON MONIXIDE : A SILENT KILLER
Can you recognize the telltale signs of carbon monoxide poisoning in your home?
- Is anyone in your house experiencing unexplained dizziness, flu-like symptoms, red lips, redness under fingernails, blurred vision and/or slurred speech?
- Can you see black deposit-like smoke or soot on the surface of your water heater, furnace or boiler?
- Is your water heater or furnace “backdrafting,” i.e., smoke or exhaust gasses blowing back into your house?
- Is there enough volume in the mechanical room for a water heater, furnace or boiler? Are exhaust and flues pitched to the chimney?
Physical symptoms are the easiest to recognize, as is the appearance of any black deposit-like smoke on the surface of your appliance. If you notice any of these telltale signs, take action right now.
Call a Tomacor licensed professional home inspector who can examine your mechanical systems, advise you on your best course of action — and perhaps save your life and the lives of your family.
Meanwhile, invest in relatively inexpensive carbon monoxide alarms, similar to fire alarms, that are available at hardware and discount stores. They can be purchased for as little as $30 each. Buy two or three and place them on each level of your home.
If you have any concern that your furnace or water heater is malfunctioning and producing this deadly gas, don’t delay! Call the fire department (311) or the gas company, and then…
